Farmer Spotlight: Ron Bridge

In this spotlight, we showcase the accomplishments of Ron Bridge, a COID patron who has successfully enhanced the beneficial use of his 30 acres of water rights on the Pilot Butte Canal.

Facing a series of challenges, Ron embarked on a mission to address his irrigation concerns. As a flood irrigator, he struggled to adequately flood his entire property, especially in the face of water cutbacks. This resulted in wasted water and rampant weed growth, necessitating frequent and unwanted herbicide applications.

Determined to overcome these obstacles, Ron implemented a range of improvements beginning in the spring of 2022. The upgrades included transitioning from flood irrigation to a pressurized system, significantly enhancing the beneficial use of his 30 acres of water rights. He also took the initiative to dig a new pond, install an underground mainline and pump station, and acquire two wheel lines and a hand line. To effectively manage weed growth, Ron enlisted the help of contracted farming services that utilized strategic farming practices to control weeds. Additionally, he planted Triticale, a temporary crop that not only helped break down sod but also contributed nitrogen to the soil.

Since completing these improvements, Ron has witnessed numerous benefits. The transition to a pressurized system immediately resulted in better water coverage and greener surroundings, a welcome change after years of struggle. Weed control is now under control, and Ron enjoys improved water utilization. Wildlife has returned to the property, serving as a testament to the positive ecological impact of his efforts. Ron believes that the value of his property has increased, exceeding the investment he made in the upgrades. The improvements have truly been a worthwhile endeavor, offering a significant return on investment and instilling a deep sense of pride in his ranch.

Looking ahead to the 2023 irrigation season, Ron has exciting plans in store. He intends to re-farm fields, planting a pasture mix and implementing pipe supply ditches. By continually optimizing his irrigation practices, Ron is committed to maximizing the potential of his land and ensuring its long-term productivity.

Furthermore, Ron has partnered with COID and the Deschutes River Conservancy to instream 1.38 acres of areas he did not prove up. This initiative allows for leasing water instream, ensuring its protection with the same priority date as the original water right. This not only provides significant instream benefits but also satisfies state beneficial use requirements, safeguarding the water rights from forfeiture.

Ron Bridge’s dedication to improving water use and ecological stewardship serves as an inspiring example for the agricultural community. We applaud Ron for his remarkable achievements and wish him continued success as he forges ahead, making significant contributions to sustainable farming practices and the preservation of our precious water resources.
