Understanding Beneficial Use

Welcome!

How it works is simple

As a water right holder in Oregon, the law states that you must use the water rights beneficially at least once every five consecutive years. This can mean watering a crop, instream leasing to keep water in the Deschutes, temporarily transferring some of the water rights to another landowner, or transferring a portion of your property’s water rights from one mapped area to a more productive section.

COID strives to help patrons protect the water rights on their property through education and collaboration. We have a variety of materials, resources and programs related to beneficial use so we can help protect the water rights on your property.

Our Water Rights Team is here to help you understand Oregon water law and what it means to be a steward of the water.
